Jung in the World | When Carl Jung Met His Soul: Confronting the Unconscious | George Bright, Red Book scholar

Jung In the World Podcast With Guest George Bright

Carl Jung’s Red Book remained hidden for nearly a century. It is the record of what happened after his 1913 break with Freud, when Jung deliberately turned toward his unconscious and met his soul.

Red Book scholar George Bright returns to Jung in the World to explore what Jung found in that confrontation and how it profoundly transformed Carl Jung’s understanding of psychoanalysis and the collective. Bright also offers a surprising reading of Freud’s break. Early psychoanalysis was a new field fighting for legitimacy, and Freud had to train his competitors.

For anyone drawn to Jung, the history of psychology, or the long work of meeting the unconscious.

In this episode:

  • Why Jung’s break with Freud was partly about the realities of a new scientific field, and why Freud had little choice but to train future competitors
  • What Jung was looking for when he turned toward his unconscious in 1913
  • How the Red Book became the source of Jung’s later theories

George Bright is a British analytical psychologist with more than three decades of private practice in London. He is a Training and Supervising Analyst with the Society of Analytical Psychology and a Member of the Chicago Society of Jungian Analysts. Educated at Cambridge University and the London School of Economics, he teaches Jung’s Red Book in London, Chicago, and Los Angeles. In 2016 he co-founded The Circle of Analytical Psychology, dedicated to close study of the Red Book and the Black Books. His paper “Synchronicity as a basis of analytic attitude” won the Michael Fordham Prize.
